Compassion

Brad Warner posted the other day an article on his blog that talked about compassion. Because every time he addresses this issue, he reiterated this Zen koan which asks Ungo ancestor ancestor Dogo: "What does the Bodhisattva Kannon (Avalokiteshvara) with all his arms and all his eyes?" The Another responds: "It as someone who extends the hand behind his head in the night to readjust her pillow. "

Here it refers to representations of Avalokiteshvara" with a thousand arms and thousand eyes ", because As a bodhisattva of compassion, he sees all and has arm around to act for the benefit of all beings.

So we Brad Warner said that compassion is a form of selfishness. Not the common variety where one tries to take everything without leaving anything for others, but in a sense that the word "compassion" is not synonymous with sacrifice.

Nishijima Roshi said that the state equilibrium in zazen we can do exactly what we want. But most of us do not really understand what we really want. We imagine all want without regard for others, but it's wrong! We are intimately connected to the deepest level with everything and everyone with whom we interact. At this level, what we want for ourselves and for others is strictly the same.

If you go see a good musician in concert, we can see the true compassion in action. The good musician does not write songs or music to sacrifice for others. It does not happen to save all beings, but this is exactly what he does for his fans. For him, this action is absolutely natural, it does exactly what it wants to do as he wants to. In this sense, his actions are selfish to the utmost, even narcissistic. Yet this activity where it deals only with himself, because he feels it's good for him, helping others in many immeasurable.

This is the type of compassion between the koan refers Ungo and Dogo, about the hand that stretches to find the pillow at night. True compassion has nothing to do with the idea of compassion.

other hand, Joshu Sasaki Roshi said: "Zen is not the way saints. But it is sometimes useful to imitate their behavior. "There are times when it is difficult to know exactly what you want. Then there may be good to imagine what a compassionate person and would be ideal. But when it does, it must be equally careful that if we acted in a purely selfish as it may be even more dangerous.

If there is a butterfly trying to emerge from its cocoon, one could imagine that would help the right thing to do. But if you do that, he was condemned: the effort to get out of its cocoon is needed to strengthen its wings. Otherwise, it could never fly. Offer its Using improperly can be extremely damaging. This is also a spring many comic movies Pierre Richard ... It creates more problems than it solves.

There is what Chögyam Trungpa called idiot compassion. By developing compassion, we must not neglect wisdom. We must begin by taking care of yourself and try not to be a burden to others. Taking care of oneself, one has to others, and can even become a good example of what a constructive and happy life.

This, again, balance. Some people are selfish to the point of injury others. Others are so generous they are hurting themselves.

Researchers in positive psychology (A psychology that focuses on optimal mental health rather than mental illness) found that positive emotions such as compassion, arouse a mind expansion, generate creativity and can think more in terms of us in terms of myself. But also try to force these positive emotions can lead to a form of "toxic insincerity." Those who have seen it at work know what we mean.

I know a girl who wants to help others so that begins in m. .. to help others. And she asks for help without thinking if it does not disturb. This is a very effective recipe for disaster!

This hand grows into the night to catch the pillow and put it back is the true form of compassion, a real action when it is needed. If we do not think before we are shifted. If you think about it afterwards, is shifted. We can not think about it for, because the moment of action is not the time for reflection.

Shinji Shobogenzo the collection of koans master Dogen

FOUR

Ryo, the Zasu (master of the temple) Mount Sei Ko District, one day became the disciple of Baso. (Mazu)

Master Baso said: sutra Which do you rely for your course?

Ryo replied On the Heart Sutra

Master Baso said: How do you speak?

Ryo replied I speak with my mind (made by the same character for heart)

Master Baso said: The spirit is the main actor, the actor will support and after six senses, so how can you talk Sutra?

Ryo replied If you can not speak to the spirit of the Sutra, you say so that only the empty space can talk?

Master Baso said: Even empty space can talk.

Ryo started to leave, slamming the sleeves of his kolomo. Master Baso recalled.

Master Baso said: Kansu!

Ryo turned his head.

Master Baso said: From birth to death, that is all!

Ryo realized the truth and hid on Mount Sci. Nobody knew what had become of him afterwards.

Commentary Gudo Nishijima roshi

The title "Zasu" suggests that a master Buddhism teaches that theory. The question "How do you speak Sutra?" also means "How do you express your life Buddhist?" Ryo's response was totally inadequate because Buddhism that expresses or can not understand that the intellect is not really Buddhism. At best, this is a pale ghost of Buddhism.

Ryo could not accept the criticism and tried to make fun of Master Baso by retorting "Do you think one can speak of empty space Sutra?" But instead of defending the attack, master Baso replied "Indeed, you begin to get close ". Buddhism is a study of reality and its purpose and its base is the fundamental reality itself.

Ryo took this response to signs of the folly of his master. Rising to leave the room, he waved his arms, ostensibly to demonstrate his pride at having defeated his master, but overtook the Baso by throwing "From birth to death, that is all!" . These words have suddenly released his little intellectual game, forcing him to face reality here and now. It is just that, "said the master, two human beings born in the world and both deserve to die, the living reality moment by moment.

After realizing the truth, Ryo disappeared forever in the mountains. What a contrast with his previous attitude, so full of arrogance!

THREE

Master Joshu Jushin District Jo asked the teacher Nansen: What happens to a person who has acknowledged? Where is she?

Master Nansen replied: He will live in the house of a benefactor of the temple facing the entrance gate of the temple and became a buffalo neutered.

Joshu Jushin said I thank the teacher for lessons I just received.

Master Nansen replied: Last night at midnight, the moon came through my window.

Commentary Nishijima Roshi:

This koan begins so idealistic master Joshu the question on the behavior of a person acknowledging reality. Perhaps, like many of our contemporaries, he has had an idealized vision of such a person: "What is the behavior of the great saints who live in the clear reality without barriers? What miracles they perform How do they express their sublime wisdom? "
Master Nansen denied these things. He took the abstract idea of Joshu and applied to a very concrete and practical. Master Nansen was getting old. Before long, the rigorous life of the temple could be too hard for him. Where would he go? It would go a benefactor of the temple, not too far off when he lead the life of a "castrated buffalo" , who lives in peace and quiet without causing trouble to anyone. Where does a person who can recognize reality? What is she doing? It is simply what's required. Joshu Jushin
esprima gratitude for the teachings of his master and the koan ends with the fourth phase: the reality itself. Master Nansen explains the simple wonder of reality: the moonlight shining through his window late at night. All situations have the same simple beauty.

Obaku Master Ki-One Mount Obaku in the district of Ko asked the master Hyakujo Ekai: When I want to share with others the lessons that you gave us, how should I teach?

Master Hyakujo Ekai remained sitting on his pillow and said nothing.

Obaku Ki-one said: How can I teach the son and grand-son of the disciples in the future?

Master Hyakujo Ekai said What you just said proves that you are somebody big.

Commentary Gudo Nishijima Roshi

This koan is similar to the history of Devanam Sakra Indra asked the Buddha "How can I protect those who wish to practice the Dharma?" , what the Buddha had responded by asking "Can you see the Dharma that you want to protect? Where is it? The desire to protect the Dharma is the same as that of protecting the area. The Buddhist practitioners protect Dharma and protect themselves by living in truth. "

The first question was abstract Obaku master. He wanted to know the best way to convey the intellectual content of the teachings of his master. The response Hyakujo was similar to that of Buddha, and more direct. He responded by presenting his own Buddhist practice, while sitting in zazen.

Master Obaku understood the value of the behavior of his master. So he put a more practical question. How could he convey the teachings of the future people with whom he would have no direct contact. In response, master Hyakujo simply told him that his (that of Obaku) understanding of the actions of his master, as well as his concern for the future disciples, showed he was a man living in reality.
Hyakujo Master was pleased qu'Obaku could pass the level of abstract philosophy at a more convenient and practical concern for his disciples and their descendants. He had no doubt about the ability to solve his problem Obaku.

Shinji Shobogenzo, the collection of koans from Dogen Master Dogen Sangha

A

Quote:

One day, Master Sekito Kisen visited the master Seigen Gyôshi Jogo temple on Mount Seigen in the District of Ki. Seigen master asked him Where do you get?

Sekito Master replied: Sokei From Mt.

Seigen Master (by grabbing his fly swatter) said: Is there something like this at Mount Sokei?

Sekito Master replied: No, not at Mount Sokei, or even in India.

Master Seigen said You never been to India, is not it?

Sekito Master replied: If I went to India, I find a flapper like yours

Master Seigen said You never been to India, so you should say something in line with your experience.

Sekito Master replied: The master could he express it in two or three concrete words, instead of letting me do everything I Kisen?

Master Seigen said It's not that I refuse to say something to you, but if I did, you would not be able to reach the target by yourself in the future.

COMMENT Nishijima Roshi

Master Seigen Gyôshi was a disciple of Master Daikan Eno, the sixth patriarch of China, and Sekito Kisen was to become his disciple. Mount Sokei Sekito arrived where he had lived until his master Daikan mort.Maître Seigen was quite proud of his lectures on Buddhism and, waving his fly whisk, he asked if Sekito conferences Mount Sokei Buddhism also explained well as his. The hossu, a flapper ornamental badge of Buddhist masters, is a symbol of the Buddhist truth.
In response, master Sekito uses hossu as a concrete symbol of the teachings of Master Seigen. He says there's nowhere lessons that are quite similar to Seigen or to where it happens, or India. Master
Seigen noted that Sekito could not find India, as it had never been there, but Sekito replies that it is possible to find the same teachings in India, the birthplace of Buddha.
However, master Seigen found that this response was unrealistic, and said that we should only speak from personal experience. Master
Sekito felt a bit speechless about a satisfactory answer, and asked the teacher for help.
Finally, Seigen Gyôshi master tells him that it would be easy, but do Sekito deprive of the opportunity to express his own truth.

The story structure contains four different views. The first is the idealist and intellectual, represented by the question master Seigen Conferences Buddhist, symbolized by the fly swatter.
In the second view, Sekito sees things from a materialistic point of view: the physical hossu hossu --- the real master is Seigen --- this is only one place, not in India or to Sokei.
Seigen Master is not satisfied and want to hear something more realistic. He knew that Sekito had never been to India, he would ask him to speak from experience, and no assumptions. From the perspective of ultimate master Seigen knew Sekito should learn how to express her own truth. That was something nobody could do it for him.

How To Reduce Billirubin Of 1.3

Shobogenzo

Not much to say, I'll upload the code koans master Dogen, beginning with introductions by Michael Eido Luetchford and Gudo Nishijima Roshi.

______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________

Shobogenzo means "The Treasure of the right eye of the Dharma". Do not look for the left eye ... Rather, the correct Dharma Eye ... Well, Shinji means "original (or true) character (writing).", That is to say, the Chinese characters in the book which is written. He is also known as "three-hundred Shobogenzo stories" and also Shobogenzo Mana, mana is an alternative reading to Shinji.
This is a collection of three hundred one of those mondo (questions and answers, discussion) in Chinese that is usually called koans, stories that describe these conversations and actions of ancient Buddhist masters.

Compiled in the thirteenth century by Master Dogen, the founder of Japanese Soto school of Zen Buddhism, one of the most brilliant philosophers of Japanese history, a three-hundred koans are divided into three sections or " books, "two hundred koans and one of one hundred to one. Its original title was simply "Shobogenzo", like the monumental work of Dogen in Japanese, but it seems that has added "Shinji" thereafter, to distinguish from each other.

Its origins are rather obscure and are still a subject of academic research. Long, even centuries, it has challenged the award of the collection and fact, until 1934, the only version available was a comment by master Shigetsu Ein dated to around half of the seventeenth century, Nentei Sambyakusoku Funogo. Then we made an important discovery in medieval archives of Kanagawa in 1934. They found a copy of one of the three volumes of Shinji Shobogenzo, dated 1288, which demonstrated that the book existed shortly after the death Master Dogen in 1253. In addition, the stories themselves have a strong resemblance to their citations in Shobogenzo Japanese master Dogen.

Today, most scholars of Buddhism have lined the attribution to master Dogen. Its build date is still disputed, but there are strong reasons to believe that Master Dogen had at least begun to compile his stay in Kenninji, even before his departure for China, perhaps as a reference material for his studies.

There are several differences on the links between the texts of the Song period where from these stories (including Europe's Keitoku Dentoroku the Shumon Toyoshu the Engo Koroku the Wanshi Goroku, etc..) as well as the nature of the relationship between the two Shôbôgenzôs master Dogen. However, it seems obvious that he has used this collection of koans as a source for his lectures and writings. While in the Shinji Shobogenzo these koans are transcribed without comment, in his masterpiece, Shobogenzo in Japanese, and in the collection of his lectures, the Eihei Koroku, Dogen constantly refers to several of these stories: he says, interprets and even deconstructed and rebuilt at the option of learning about it.

The fact that Master Dogen described these as kosoku mondo (ancestral criteria) or innen (causes and effects) is significant: it does not call them the koans. He used this word to indicate the Dharma or the universe in which we live, as in Shobogenzo Genjokoan (The Universe realized), which use completely different from that of the Rinzai school. He uses it in all his writings to examine and explain the Buddhist teachings and the logical system of Buddhism. However, it remains important to note that nowhere in all his work, Master Dogen not advise them use in the practice of Zazen.

(From Michael Eido Luetchford and Jeremy Pearson). _________________

Any ideas master Dogen are expressed in a structured in four phases. Firstly, it expresses a problem in a idealist, in other words, an idea using abstract concepts. Immediately after, he explains the same problem, but this time at an angle lens, or materialistic. In other words, he gives concrete examples and facts. Then a third time, he expressed the problem in terms of a real problem, that is to say in that of action.
course it can not fully explain the reality of the problem through words in a book, but it does so by bringing the subjective point of view that this first and the second objective viewpoint. It is a synthesis that is a realistic assessment based on the philosophy of action, which says that in the action, which is a synthesis of self and the outside world. And in the end, he tries to suggest the ineffable and subtle nature of reality itself by using a symbolic discourse, poetic or figurative. The
Shobogenzo is filled with these explanations to four times. Even the chapters can be divided according to four groups: theoretical, objective, realistic and figurative / poetic. The contents of the chapters is the same and often even paragraphs.
Reading Shobogenzo is difficult because it seems logical contradictions abound. But this is due to its use in four steps, because the views are always subjective and objective contradictory, and a realistic explanation always seems to contradict the previous two. These stories

Shinji Shobogenzo are built on the same structure. This story is very realistic, which served to teach the fundamentals of Buddhism. They have nothing mystical or incomprehensible: they are coloring how teachers tell us the truth.

Who Makes Gordon's Spotting Scopes

fun to make sparks with flint

The other day in Frankfurt at the sesshin Brad Warner has cited this passage from master Dogen where it discourages its followers to make fun of sparks with flint. Flint is the variety of stone that team lighters, thereby igniting the wick (for antique lighters and zippo fuel) or gas (for modern lighters), it seems that in the thirteenth century, some found this feature quite astonishing for a game to worry
Although
.

I've seen kids play tirelessly to turn a lighter or to make sparks when there is more gas ...

reflection that came to him, is that today, Dogen seems not to have fun on a console (Playstation or otherwise), reflecting further on the fact that, after all, a playstation, this sparks are ultimately found behind the screen operation. And just like silicon derives its name from the flint stone which is a silica, that is the loop closed.

Our greatest contemporary entertainment (and I myself included) are sparks made with flint! ...

If we are serious in practicing the Way, we must pay attention to this problem. The computer, mobile phone, game consoles are, in the end that made sparks with flint and we are mesmerized by them as they puff us a lot of time, preventing us from doing our job, to go play sports, do some exercise, go to the show, read real books (in paper printed with characters and everything!) and also to sit down, was not it pathetic that 10 minutes against a wall, facing ourselves. Can we think about and see that we tend let us enslave with more solidity than the heavier strings?

Allez hop! At zafu!

Get Pregnant Online Game

Well, I not contribute often, but I thought yesterday that I could approach this subject.

The basic approach in deciding to "be" Buddhist is taking refuge.
In some schools, this is the subject of a ceremony, others are less stringent on this subject. What is it?

"I take refuge in the Buddha,
" I take refuge in the Dharma,
"I take refuge in Sangha".

said these shelters, they said (essentially to oneself) that take the Buddha and his successors as guides, we will put their teachings into practice, and we rely on all of those who do the same to deepen and expand practice / study.

If I write and "practice / study", mainly because one can not go without the other.

Sometimes, some will object to the religious aspect of Buddhism that it is a philosophy. They forget what the philosophy in antiquity. What we we call philosophy, Robert M Pirsig calls the "philosophologie. We never learn the discourse on the philosophy: history philosophy, the history of their thinkers, elements of their thought, but this is not a philosophy.

In antiquity, when adhered to a philosophical school, this meant to comply with the rules and teachings of this school, in her everyday life. Each school had its own rules of life, and adhere to the teachings was not only a mind game, it was a commitment of the whole being. In this sense we can say the philosophies of antiquity they were closer to what we call "religion" than us, we call "philosophy".

That said, it should also to remember that Man is a symbolic animal. We need this symbolic and try to eliminate it will only make it back otherwise. In this sense, Buddhism is a religion. I still remember that word, instead of etymology so often advanced, but that is false, derived from the verb "religere", that is to say reread, and refers specifically to this aspect of ritual that is just what is the symbolic.

Mokudô Master Taisen (Deshimaru) said that the ceremonies, is theater. Certainly, but it would also forget the religious dimension of the theater. The tragedies of Sophocles, Euripides and others were religious ceremonies, which will leave no surprise to those whom the theater is just entertainment. A wedding is theater. A funeral is theater (and no less!). A graduation ceremony is the theater of proof, there are countries (like ours) or it is not.

is for these reasons that I continue to lead mini-ceremonies. Until now there were just a recitation of the Heart Sutra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFletFs5StE&feature=channel_page). I have not yet had the opportunity to impart the precepts, but I guess it will come.

Can we blame the Sotoshu as the AZI is not the practice ceremonies that these associations. Is that these ceremonies take too much space compared to practice (zazen) and study (texts). When this is only the "theater", then one could simply actors. If we want progress, we need to think carefully about the appropriate balance between these aspects.

For now, I will therefore make every morning sampai , like every day since September 2003.

Storm ... Part third and end

Des Arabesques signed with the pen of an angel, but he waited until the ebb and flow of the tide erases very smoothly sentences to sacred characters, even before his return to the ether. The sea will keep his writings, his thoughts secret in the mystery of this story.
It will remain on the strike, a drawing, signature, black and white, color and a little fun in the waves clear in their undulations.
I remember this storm and an angel, free as a bird fluttering along streams and between the branches.
I remember an angel flying over the castles and temples, admiring the city as the sun built time of twilight.
I remember that was like an angel thought.

Thank KHALIL GIBRAN , reflections it has to devote myself to writing this trilogy, () (gray literature "meeting") thank you to missteps that are never the chance ... thank you to those storms that lead us to a "one step further" our personal history, thank you to all players invisible in this fable that do not have one. Any resemblance to actual events or existing characters, is neither accidental nor coincidental.

How Can Men Stop Getting Boners

Storm: part 2

Party second
came the meeting ..

The angel was there, in silence tormented earth. I approached him, he raised his head slowly and I saw his eyes very clear ...
He stood silent at first, stretched his arms, throat, sitting in the paralysis of the air, on the day so far in the folds of the endings of the sky, then straightened and the universal language of creation of worlds ... He said:

" What is the misfortune of this world is like the drama of the whole earth. The hypocrisy does not change its nature if it changes people, cheating and lies do not become honest if they are adorned with beautiful fabrics or lodge in the palace. I see that Imposture blended do not become loyal if she takes the train or the balloon. Greed will not be fair, even if she learned the steps and weights. One thing, single
is worthy of love and admiration, is the awakening of the soul happens to be the deepest. It opens the heart to a world of song and color. Life becomes a column of light linking the Earth to infinity. It is a divine flame which comes from the consciousness of the universe to illuminate the heart of being, like a silk thread. is a tenderness that pervades the heart, and from there we will refuse everything can not stay with her and she "
There was a rustle of wings, then nothing, the angel had disappeared and it was silent again ...
On surface of the earth, mysterious arabesques or you could read ... (more)

Party first.

My eyelids start getting heavy fatigue that takes me ...
But I remember. I remember that angel returning from a long journey over the old stones, an angel caught in a violent storm, a storm marked on any map but which he knew existed. Buffeted by the swirling winds, playing him like a straw, this toy became an instant son dislocated in silk this invisible puppeteer.
"It's when he emerged from his grasp in a last gasp, he was struck by an intense flash he had seen it coming." How had he seen this tracer only he knew, he who travels for so long the ether.
"A burst of light, an intense flash that illuminated the sky and struck him in the chest, piercing the right through" according to those who had followed the scene from a small shed.
"He fell like a torch, like scroll chaotic and disappeared from sight on the horizon."
Against this desolate earth he came to one knee to the ground, wounded, bruised in body and in his soul by this episode.

Tournicoton, which disappears

The news broke brutal gallery Tournicoton just closed its doors, and at this time KUAI HELE disappeared. The "why" and "how" will not be mentioned in this post. Just a few lines dedicated to Nasstik Mariaka and, as a courtesy to WORK with that little extra that I express no modesty here. You know me well enough to know what may have my heart.
I feel a vibration was killed, but I also know she did not disappear.
Tonight a moth, with wings of a yellow-orange came to rest on my keyboard as I write these lines, a butterfly beating its fragile wings gently, like a technicolor idling. I look out into the night, stars shine, but more particularly ... I smiled, closing his eyes and I imagine this butterfly, as a thought related to that star.
